Women of a Certain Age (The Public Theater) by Richard Nelson

Play 3 of The Gabriels: Election Year in the Life of One Family

Though I missed the first play in this cycle, Hungry plays 2, What Did You Expect, and this play were wonderfully realistic portraits of a family in flux and crisis. This extended family unit is desperately trying to hold onto some hope and optimism for the future while dealing with unexpected and unwelcome changes and challenges; mirroring the issues with which the country is dealing.

Women of a Certain Age takes place on the eve of Election Day, 2016. All of the action takes place around the kitchen table with the actual preparation of a meal occurring, pulling the audience in visually, aurally and through the scents which begin to waft through the intimate theater space.

Women of a Certain Age is, by turns, poignant and humorous, touching and a little ridiculous.  ‘The Gabriels’ felt like spending time with family; fun, fury, flaws and all.
